Monument Health: Dedicated to Making a Difference, Every Day

Monument Health has been a fixture in the Black Hills since 1878, when Sisters of the Holy Cross opened a hospital in Deadwood to serve the prospectors and businessmen who arrived during the Black Hills Gold Rush. Additional hospitals were built in communities in the Northern and Central Hills. Two hospitals—St. John’s McNamara and Bennett-Clarkson—served Rapid City for many years, but rising costs and emerging technology convinced administrators it would be more beneficial to combine forces and merge into a single health care system. The result was Rapid City Regional Hospital, which opened in December 1979. Regional Health became a dominant force in the region for four decades, inspiring health care providers throughout the Black Hills to join the network. In January 2020, Regional Health joined the Mayo Clinic Care Network and rebranded itself as Monument Health, a name that reflects the area’s popular monuments and evokes a sense of permanence. The collaboration allows Monument to remain an independent network but provides access to the Mayo Clinic’s physicians and expertise.

Today, Monument Health is the largest health care system in the Black Hills, providing services for patients in 20 communities across western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming. Headquartered in Rapid City, Monument’s vast network includes five hospitals, eight specialty and surgical centers, and 40 medical clinics/health care service centers. More than 4,500 providers offer care in 33 medical specialties. Their extensive list of services includes cancer care, orthopedics, dermatology, heart and vascular care, general surgery, primary care, and much more.

Monument Health is one of 40 Mayo Clinic Care Network members worldwide and the first in South Dakota. Their vision is to make a difference every day. Embracing values such as trust, respect, compassion, community, and excellence, Monument focuses on delivering high-quality care that makes an impact on our local communities for generations to come. Over the years, Monument has received many awards, accreditations, and certifications, testament to their ongoing commitment toward providing top-notch care for patients and their families, health care providers, and the local communities they serve.
