Hello February
The shortest month of the year can sometimes feel the longest when temperatures drop and daylight seems scarce. Let us help you break out of the winter blues with fun events around the Black Hills community.
Start out the month at the Black Hills Stock Show, as the event closes out the first week of February. It’s the second largest annual event in the state behind the Sturgis motorcycle rally. Highlights for those who aren’t diehard rodeo fans are the art show, live music, ladies night, and a petting zoo for kids.
Looking for a night out? Celebrate the little princess in your life at Box Elder’s 1st Annual Princess Ball! Each princess in attendance will get a free tiara and wand, and enjoy a night of dancing and snacks. The ball is on February 6, and tickets are available at the Box Elder City Hall during normal business hours.
If you’re looking for a little more grown-up entertainment, check out Deadwood’s Mardi Gras party the same weekend. The fun kicks off on Friday, February 5 and continues through Saturday. Cajun food, parades and live music guarantee a good time. Deadwood also hosts the Fat Classic the same weekend if you prefer to get out and about on two (fat) wheels.
Prefer to spend Valentine’s Day having fun and getting splattered in mud? Check out the Indoor Motocross series at the Central States Fairground on the 13 and 14. It’s a recurring event from October until March, so you have multiple chances to catch it.
Speaking of Valentine’s Day, head over to Hill City for their annual Tour de Chocolate on February 13. You can mosey along their art-studded streets and sample tasty chocolate fare. Don’t have a sweet tooth? This year they’ve added the Polar Bear Chili Cook Off, so there’s something for everyone.
If you want to expand your horizons while staying home, check out the Black Hills Film Festival. It’s completely online this year, so you can enjoy films produced or shot in South Dakota in addition to national and international films. The festival runs from February 18 to 25.
If you’re a foodie, or simply like a good meal, don’t miss Restaurant Week in Custer from February 24 to 27. The town comes out in full force to tickle your taste buds and push the envelope of the local food scene. Participating restaurants put out their menus throughout the week, keep an eye out for updates.
Round out your month with a beach party on ice skates. We’re serious! On the 27, head to downtown Rapid City to catch the ice rink’s last day to skate, complete with flamingos.
