Halloween in the Hills
Fall is in full swing, which means festivals and family fun are as ripe for the picking as, well, pumpkins!
Whether you have young kids trick-or-treating for the first time, or old kids who still want to have some Halloween fun, the Black Hills have something for everyone!
Every Saturday in October, head to Old MacDonald’s Farm in Rapid City for wagon and pony rides, a corn bin, pumpkin patch, and adorable farm animals! The festival is $8 per person, but your receipt gets you in for free every weekend after that! October 16, 23, and 30 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Paranormal investigations of the Adams House. Fridays and Saturdays in October, you have the chance to commune with the supernatural at the historic Adams House in Deadwood. Participants will use night vision and full spectrum cameras, audio recorders, and more. They limit sessions to 20 participants, 12 and older, and you must buy tickets in advance.
Carnage on Creek Drive. Game on! Rapid City is hosting their first ever haunted house — but the crew behind it have been in the business for years. More than just a haunted house, Carnage on Creek Drive plunges you into a survival scenario where only the brave will survive! For the younger crowd, they have a special “lights up” event on October 30. Times and days vary and tickets are available online.
Spearfish Rec Center’s Spooktacular Carnival. Enjoy carnival games, candy, and fun for the entire family! While you’re in the northern hills, take a drive through Spearfish Canyon to see the best of Black Hills fall leaves. October 29, 5-8 p.m.
Storybook Island Safe ‘n’ Sweet Trick or Treat. The perfect chance for your kids to stock up on candy without worrying about them running around local neighborhoods. There are two time slots this year, 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m., on October 30, so it’s also a great option if you have younger kids who go to bed early. Entry is $3 per person, and you can skip the line by buying tickets ahead of time until October 20, just call 605-342-6357.
Scare in the Square. Held in conjunction with Downtown Rapid City Business Group’s Trick-or-Treat, Scare in the Square is a fun afternoon stop for the whole family. Enjoy snacks, games, crafts, and more at Main Street Square, then grab a map of participating businesses and do some serious candy collecting. October 30, noon-2 p.m.
Eat too many treats? The Bellamy Fitness Center has you covered! Join their Presidential virtual 5k race series the first week of November and work off some of that candy. You can take your dog, your family, or just yourself, and take part in the event all week long on their Facebook page.
