Cuisine in the Hills

While the Midwest may not seem like a place you move to explore new flavors, the Black Hills have quite a bit to offer in the realm of culinary adventures. From unique takes on tacos and burgers to a range of European and Asian cuisines, read on for our favorites in Rapid City and beyond. Bonus: many offer military discounts!

American
South Dakota is one of the top 10 beef producing states in the nation, which means you’ll find great burgers and steaks all over the Black Hills. Head to downtown Rapid City to Murphy’s Pub and Grill, or Thirsty’s for a tasty burger in a great atmosphere.

If good pizza, wings, and subs are what you’re craving, check out Pauly’s Pizzeria & Sub Co. on the east side of town. Their pizzas are perfectly balanced and their subs are piled so high with meat and fixings you’ll need a nap when you’re done eating.

BBQ
Just up the interstate in Summerset, you’ll find no-frills Texas-style BBQ at J.R.’s Rhodehouse BBQ Pit. They have all the BBQ staples you’re craving — racks of ribs, brisket, links and butts — plus mouthwatering sides that will put you right into a food coma. They open Thursdays through Saturdays at 11 a.m. and close at either 7:30 p.m. or when they sell out, which they do frequently.

Breakfast Faves
If you’re looking for your new favorite breakfast spot, Cambell Street Cafe is a favorite with locals for their affordable prices and huge servings. They also serve lunch, and you’ll find your favorite American staples done in the same manner as breakfast. The thing not to miss is their caramel rolls; their amazing sticky, gooey goodness may make you lose points on your waist measurement, but they’re absolutely worth it.

Colonial House is another Rapid City favorite for all meals of the day, but their breakfast in particular draws a crowd. Find all of your favorites from standard scrambled eggs and bacon to omelets and pastries made from scratch daily. Their caramel roll is right there in the running with Cambell Street Cafe’s, which means you should try both and decide which one is your favorite!

Fine Dining
For a great date night spot or somewhere to celebrate, Wine Cellar is the perfect place. They carefully prepare all of their food to order, and the menu ranges from artfully garnished salads to fresh salmon, hand-trimmed filet mignon, and flaky poulet en croute. Top it off with their house-made desserts and extensive wine list, and you have the makings of a perfect evening.

If you’re looking for a more traditional steakhouse, Dakotah Steakhouse is not to be missed. They’re a true western steakhouse that offers USDA prime and choice grade steak, but also locally sourced buffalo, elk, and walleye. Beyond their tantalizing menu, their extensive selection of beer, top-shelf spirits, and diverse wine list will make sure your meal has the perfect pairing.

Indian
Everest Cuisine boasts both Indian and Nepalese food, and the flavor of their food makes them the go-to for most locals for savory and authentic dishes. They offer a great lunch buffet as well for those who are looking to try out a variety of their menu before picking a new favorite.

Kathmandu Bistro has a great selection of Indian dishes and desserts. Whether you want the more savory northern dishes like chicken masala and samosas or more spicy southern dishes, you’ll find something to love here. While you’re there, don’t miss the mango kulfi, it’s a tasty treat worth the trip all on its own.

Italian
Sabatino’s is the newest game in the Rapid City dining scene, but they’re ready to tickle your tastebuds with creative Italian dishes. From beautifully curated cheese spreads to Italian classics like gnocchi, lasagna, and risotto, they’ll treat you to an amazing meal no matter the time of day.

Jamaican
Looking for hearty food with amazing Caribbean flair? A&D Jamaican is a hidden gem in Rapid City that you shouldn’t miss. From goat curry to savory brown stew and veggies, they will excite your taste buds with incredible flavors. Whatever you do, don’t miss the jerk chicken with their house jerk sauce.

Japanese & Sushi
Sumo Japanese Kitchen’s menu hosts a great mix of sushi, Japanese udon soup, and Korean dishes like bibimbap and bulgogi. They’re probably one of the few places in town you can find a good poke bowl, as well.

Ichiban is another tasty spot for both sushi and Japanese cuisine. Their list of premium rolls and nigiri is one of the best in town, while their selection of ramen, udon, and rice bowls ensures they have something for everyone.

Mediterranean
The Gyro Hub is a favorite for lunch, with gyros packed full of more tastiness than should be allowed in one pita. Take your pick from a classic gyro with lamb, vegetables, and tzatziki, or ramp up the flavor with spicy lamp, grilled veggies, and hummus. Top off your meal with their house made baklava or chocolate nut rolls!

Mexican
There may be Mexican restaurants in the hills with more extensive menus, but few places have the flavor you’ll find at El Sombrero Mexican Restaurant. They have all of your favorite staples, but they do them with the spices and sauces you’d expect from authentic Mexican food. Their sopapillas and margaritas are a delicious way to round out a good meal.

Just down the road from El Sombrero, Sabor a Mexico is another local favorite for amazing eats at a great price. Stop in for their lunch specials, or order ahead for takeout. You’ll get authentic food and large portions for a great price.

Pho & Vietnamese
Pacific Rim Cafe on the east side of town has a great selection of traditional Vietnamese dishes and local flavor. Get a bowl of pho topped with your protein of choice, noodle stir-fry, and spring rolls. Don’t miss their mochi ice cream or a refreshing Vietnamese iced coffee.

Pho Vietnam does more than just pho, but you won’t be disappointed in their namesake dish. Choose from rare steak, brisket, meatballs, chicken, shrimp, or a combination of your choosing atop a bowl of savory broth and the usual garnishes. If you’re not feeling pho, they also have a great selection of stir-fry, vermicelli bowls, and crispy chow mein.

Ramen/Noodles
Bokujo Ramen just opened this winter, but the quality of their ramen is already making waves in Rapid City. They source many of their ingredients locally — such as meat from Wall, and mushrooms from here in Rapid — and the difference in flavor is noticeable in each bowl of ramen. Add on their mushroom foil yaki or fresh edamame and you’ll think you’ve died and gone to ramen heaven!

Thai
Baan Thai is just outside the gate, and while the convenient location makes it hard to beat, the food is some of the best you’ll find. Load up on satay, pad Thai, and your favorite curry, you won’t regret it. Their food is so good many drive from Rapid out to base just to grab curry!

A little further in town, Thai Thai is another great option to satisfy your massaman curry or pineapple fried rice craving. Quick service and tasty food should put them in your dining rotation, not to mention their Thai iced tea.
