In 1776, the 13 colonies in North America claimed their independence from England, which eventually led to the formation of the United States. Today, we celebrate Independence Day as a historic event of freedom.
Many families will celebrate with grill outs and family gatherings. Some will be working to serve and protect — especially as the Black Hills welcomes visitors from around the world to celebrate our nation’s milestone at Mount Rushmore. But, for as long as the U.S has been an independent nation, fireworks have been a part of our celebrations.
John Adams envisioned fireworks as part of the festivities on the signing day in 1776. For six years, fireworks were reserved for elite uses. However, in 1783, a large variety of fireworks became available for public use.
Continue the tradition of viewing the lights in the sky at one of these spectacular Black Hills events or by purchasing your own. (Note: fireworks in city limits are restricted. View Pennington County and Meade County ordinances at the links.)
